Community Murals
Handbook & Case Studies

A Rural Action Community Toolbox Book
by Amy Lipka and Steven McDaniel
Introduction by Carol Kuhre

Rural Action's Arts & Cultural Heritage Program released this illustrated handbook on its community mural process in May 2001. During the development of that process over the past six years, a number of rural communities in Appalachian Ohio have been touched by the ability of the arts to inspire pride of place.

The book contains step-by-step guidelines along with essays on asset building, partnerships, the artistic process, visioning, volunteerism, tourism, youth murals and more. There are chapters on community involvement, publicity, special events, technical information, sample contracts, volunteers, safety and liability, costs, funding, and marketing as well as a resource section that includes a list of helpful web sites and publications.

"In the long run," according to the book's introduction, "the impact of the mural happens both during the process and after the completion of the project and is felt by participants, visitors, and in the regional economy."

Essays in the book were contributed by collaborators, funders, community partners, mural artists, and Rural Action staff.
