Carol Kuhre of Athens County has received
an Outstanding Leadership Heritage Award from Ohio’s Hill Country
Heritage Area (OHCHA) for her leadership in community development and
heritage projects
over many
years. She was involved in the early stages of creating Ohio’s
Hill Country Heritage Area, an organization that honors local knowledge
and provides a mechanism for people in their communities to become
involved in an effort to utilize heritage as the foundation for sustainable
economic development in Ohio's Appalachian Region.
Tim Traxler, chair of the OHCHA Inspiring Practices Committee
said, "For
many years Carol Kuhre's vision, dedication, leadership skills and love
for her community gave direction and spark to the creation and the many
remarkable accomplishments of Rural Action. Her leadership has given
inspiration and direction to others throughout our region to appreciate
and value the wonderful environmental and cultural assets of Ohio's Hill
Country. Thanks to Carol and her clear vision, giving spirit, positive
energy and good work, we are all more aware of how rich and beautiful
Ohio's Hill Country Heritage Area really is."
As Executive Director of Rural Action since its inception, Carol has
applied principles of sustainable development at a local level. Rural
Action is committed to engaging citizens in knowing, valuing and preserving
the region’s environmental and cultural assets. One of Carol’s
major accomplishments during her tenure there involved development of
a mural corridor that includes 12 murals and spans five counties. She
also oversaw creation of the traditional music CD Fine Times At
Our House and the Lights In The Darkness video about
teen depression and suicide prevention, in addition to oral history collections,
interactive theater and the Countdown To The Millennium project.
Carol retired from Rural Action in January 2004 but remains active in
peace and justice issues both here and abroad. "I was very surprised
and pleased to receive one of the Outstanding Leadership Heritage awards," Carol
recently said. "It has been a privilege to work with members of
the Ohio's Hill Country Heritage Area organization toward our common
venture of renewing our rural area by building upon the cultural and
ecological assets of the region. Development that is truly lasting and
sustainable requires that community and economic development be undertaken
only after we acquire a deep knowledge of our bioregion. The Ohio's Hill
Country Heritage organization educates us toward that end."
