About ELP

Rural Action's Environmental Learning Program (ELP) is an educational program serving Grade 1-8 teachers and students in the Alexander, Federal Hocking, Trimble, and Vinton County School Districts in Appalachian Ohio. Other school districts may be included as scheduling permits. We provide:

  • School-site and field-site program visits by ELP Educators, including pre- and post-visit consultations
  • SchoolLinks-An internet learning resource containing environmental learning information and lessons for teachers and students
  • In-service workshops on integrating environmental education into classroom curriculum

Our Educational Mission

The Environmental Learning Program (ELP) uses an interdisciplinary approach to environmental education, with an emphasis on outdoor, experiential learning. Through innovative learning episodes and on-going projects which complement classroom instruction, we seek to:

  • Increase the overall ecological literacy of students.
  • Foster a sense of wonder, responsibility, and stewardship for ecological systems and our natural world, with attention to the places where we live.
  • Stimulate awareness, expand knowledge, and develop skills and attitudes necessary to make sound decisions about environmental issues in our communities and our lifestyles.

Program Basics

ELP Educators conduct program visits at the schoolsin classrooms, on school grounds, or in land labsor will meet and guide classes in environmental field trips. Field trips are conducted at area state parks, camps, natural areas, or at relevant sites such as landfills and recycling centers.

School groups may choose either half-day (2.5 hours) or full-day (5 hours) visits. Repeat visits are strongly encouraged, so that we may continue to build upon previous concepts and projects, to form coherent and cumulative learning experiences for the students. The Program will encourage and assist with ongoing projects for children to lead within their own communities and homes.

In-service training workshops are also provided for teachers of all subjects and age levels interested in integrating Environmental Education into the classroom curricula. Trainings will introduce and expand upon methods and techniques for using environmental learning to meet classroom goals across the curriculum.
