The ELP Curriculum

ELP's curriculum has been designed to assist students in meeting the Ohio Proficiency Test Standards (Grade Level Learning Outcomes) set by the Ohio Department of Education. The ELP utilizes cutting-edge education reform methods and techniques including:

  • Interdisciplinary teaching, with an emphasis on natural history and environmental issues
  • Hands-on discovery and sensory awareness
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Cooperative learning
  • Lessons which complement current classroom curricula
  • Service learningcommunity-based projects to explore environmental issues, promote stewardship, and to implement projects to benefit our communities

Topics featured in our curriculum include: Biodiversity, air, energy and the environment, land use, solid waste and recycling, geology, winter ecology, aquatic explorations, natural rythyms, nature-inspired art, history and geography of local natural resource uses, journaling, and creative writing. Assistance with ongoing school and community-based stewardship projects is also offered.

About the Educators

The Environmental Learning Program staff has a diverse background in formal and nonformal education. The staff includes a teacher certified in Environmental Education, and others with B.S., B.A., and Associate degrees. College students, college and high school interns, and community volunteers also assist with the program.

ELP is guided by

  • Advisory Committee composed of area professionals in environmental education and related fields
  • SchoolLinks Committee composed of teachers in various school districts, grade levels, and subject disciplines
  • Ohio EE 2000 statewide strategic plan for environmental education, written by educators
