Monday Creek Restoration Project
(MCRP) and Rural Action's Environmental
Learning Program (ELP) are presenting a summer watershed day camp
in New Straitsville. A $15 fee covers lunch and snack costs, and
some partial scholarships are available. Additional costs of the program are
funded by the US EPA.
Registration forms are available online at www.mondaycreek.org
or by contacting the MCRP office at 740-394-2047.
For a third year, Rural Action-sponsored programs bring an exciting water
quality-focused summer camp to these Athens County communities. Students from
ages 9 to 13 engage in small-group, hands-on educational activities, which
include a watershed tour and examinations of pollution, acid mine drainage,
erosion and
riparian vegetation.
"I think the watershed camp is a good thing," remarked 2004 participant
Roland Bennett. "It teaches kids to take care of the environment. If kids
care for the environment, it will be better for them, too. People should also
go because it’s fun!" Each camp allows youths to have close encounters
with nature through field trips, macroinvertebrate sampling, reflection and
journaling.
"The summer watershed camps offer a great opportunity for working parents
and adventuresome kids who might be a bit tired of playing video games and watching
Sponge Bob by July," commented Ann Bonner, parent of 2004 Chauncey summer
camp participants Jess and Cliff Bonner. "The camps have flexible drop
off and pick up times and the cost is minimal, way less expensive than day
care.
Plus the kids get to explore the secret world of their watershed by catching
and identifying bugs and plants, making models, learning about outdoor careers,
touching live animals and playing lots of games."
