Program description
The Jobs Training Program at Rural Action is funded by grants
through the Jessie Ball Dupont Fund, administered by the Episcopal Diocese
of Southern Ohio, The Proctor Foundation, and a contract agreement with
the local Department of Jobs and Family Services.
In collaboration with the Appalachian Center for Economic Networks,
the Appalachian Peoples Action Coalition, Community Food Initiatives,
Good Works, Re-Use Industries, and the local Department of Jobs and
Family Services, Rural Action continues to administer the Jobs Training
Program.
Through assignments made by Athens County Department of Jobs and Family
Services, participants are given the support and training needed to
successfully make the transition from welfare to work. Rural Action
provides training for job skills in the following areas: receptionist/secretarial,
computer literacy/operation, word processing, general office skills,
filing, typing, custodial/maintenance and housing repair. We also do
extensive interview training with participants, individually and in-group
settings.
Additionally, we focus on life skills which play a major role in the
success of the participant. Issues such as self-esteem, time management,
conflict resolution, communication skills, personal hygiene, problem
solving, coping skills, transportation and daycare can be major barriers
to employment for the participant.
Highlights
During the flood of 1998, JTS gave their own time and labor to come
to the aid of flood victims in desperate need of help in the Trimble,
Glouster, Jacksonville and Amesville area. In 1998 and 1999 Christmas
parties for local children were planned and facilitated by Jobs Training
Staff.
Successes
Two former JTS hired on as paid staff. Six former JTS became VISTAs.
91 participants trained and 43 employed for a combined total of 315
months, of training provided.
