2002 Annual Report

Letter from the Board Chair

Dear Friends of Rural Action,

It is with much pleasure that I invite you to read the annual report of Rural Action’s programs and accomplishments during the past year. You will be amazed at the breadth and scope of efforts being made to implement our mission of promoting economic, social and environmental justice in Appalachian Ohio through "Healthy Economies," "Healthy Communities," and "Healthy Environments."

From a Board perspective, I would like to call your attention to the establishment of a Designated Fund to build a financial basis for the long-term well being of Rural Action. Friends of Rural Action are hosting fundraising receptions that are resulting in contributions from folks who support the organization’s purpose. All donations are welcome. There is no such thing as too small of a gift. By giving together, we can leverage our resources for common goals.

This is a bittersweet time for the Board, Rural Action staff, our area and as we deal with the impending retirement of Carol Kuhre, the Executive Director. A regional search process is in place and the position is being advertised; we are hopeful that someone may be hired as early as September, which will allow for some transition time with Carol.
We acknowledge Carol’s exceptional visionary leadership and accomplishments, and appreciate the legacy she will be leaving for many years to come that impacts the region and it’s people.

It is also with anticipation and a bit of anxiety that the Board goes through a search process to locate a person to fill the position of Executive Director. Notice that I did not say, "fill Carol’s shoes" or "take Carol’s place." That cannot be done; neither should it be attempted. New leadership will bring change as this person establishes his/her own place with the organization; this will challenge all of us to see change, not as a loss, but as a way to gain. We wish Carol and her family well as she transitions into another aspect of life.

Deanna L. Tribe
Chair, Rural Action Board
