Highlights
Sustainable Environments
Federal Valley Watershed Group
FVWG brings together citizens committed to restoring and preserving
water quality, environmental health and recreation in the Federal
Valley
Watershed. Members and partners raise community awareness of
watershed issues through education and outreach, encourage preservation
of naturally and historically significant areas and promote good
land use planning, healthy agriculture and wise forestry procedures.
2003 Accomplishments:
•
Conducted outreach at many area events.
•
Hosted public planning meetings with 40 participants in Kilvert,
Amesville and Trimble, featuring discussion and ranking of water
problems.
•
Hosted two Technical Advisory Meetings in Amesville, with citizens
contributing to our Management and Acid Mine Drainage and
Abatement Plans.
•
Organized two trash pick-ups with 15 participants, gathering 95 bags
of trash along SR 329 as part of our Adopt-A-Highway commitment.
•
Educated 15 kids about water quality issues at our Watershed Day
Camp.
•
Held two Bus Tours, educating 36 local residents about watershed
issues.
•
Worked with volunteers who contributed 278 volunteer hours.
Monday
Creek Restoration Project
MCRP serves as a collaborative venture dedicated to reclaiming the Monday Creek
Watershed by working to improve water quality, expand educational outreach
programs and build relationships with watershed residents and communities.
2003 Accomplishments:
•
Reclaimed a 1.8-acre gob pile and provided limestone treatment of
1,500 linear feet of stream at the Grimmett Site.
•
Planted 800 trees on a ten-acre plot in Shawnee.
•
Cleaned trash from streets and public areas in New Straitsville,
including one mile of stream, and along three miles of SR 78 between
Murray City and Buchtel.
•
Visited seven reclamation sites during Watershed Tours with 58
participants.
•
Mentored in the building of a new canoe by area youth in Shawnee.
•
Conducted outdoor education workshops with over 250 area youth.
•
Worked with 42 volunteers, providing 164 volunteer hours.
Sunday Creek Watershed Group
SCWG is committed to restoring and preserving water quality through
community interaction, conservation and education in pursuit of a healthy
ecosystem capable of supporting biodiversity and recreation. SCWG focuses
on trash and litter cleanup, acid mine drainage remediation, improving
wastewater treatment, habitat enhancement, stream bank erosion control,
education and outreach.
2003 Accomplishments:
• Conducted and organized many educational outreach events
including: fish seining, water sampling and bug collection for World
Water Monitoring Day at Trimble High School and at a Sunday Creek
Fish Seining Tour; assemblies teaching teens about watersheds, water
quality and wildlife, summer day camps focusing on the importance
of clean water in local watersheds, and environmental education
sessions for OU Hydrology and Environmental Sciences students.
• Helped volunteers with trash cleanups along local roads and the
Buckeye Trail, also refreshing trail markers and planting over 2,000
trees in Perry Co. and Corning Park.
•
Presented at the Ohio Environmental Council’s Sustainable
Watersheds Conference, hosted monthly public meetings and toured
SCWG restoration project sites with US EPA officials for the Ohio
Mineland Partnership.
• Collaborated with the Athens City-County Health Dept. on a Septic
System Upgrade Plan intended to partially reimburse homeowners for
the costs of upgrading existing septic systems or installing new
systems.
• Conducted long-term water quality monitoring at 13 Sunday Creek
sites.
• Worked with 211 volunteers, providing 808 volunteer hours, and 577
children.
