2004 Accomplishments


Federal Valley Watershed Group

Conducted outreach at fair and festivals in Morgan, Athens and Washington Counties.

Hosted public talks by local experts on septic systems, abandoned mine lands, 2002 Federal Farm Bill (the New Farm Bill) and stream bank stabilization.

Hosted four Technical Advisory Meetings in Amesville, with technical experts helping with writing the FVWG Plan.

Organized two trash pick-ups with 20 participants, gathering 120 bags of trash along SR 329 as part of an Adopt-A-Highway commitment.

Hosted two Kids Canoe float days with a total of 30 kids in attendance.

Held two bus tours that educated 32 local residents about watershed issues.

Worked with volunteers who contributed 350 volunteer hours.

Completed phase III testing of AMD impacted areas.

Assisted Ohio EPA teams in completing the Total Maximum Daily Load study to access the health of the Federal Valley Watershed.

Monday Creek Restoration Project

Worked with 76 volunteers to plant 8,000 loblolly pine seedlings (provided by Sunday Creek Coal Company) on 20 acres of reclaimed strip mine land.

Held Public Meetings in (6) Nelsonville and (7) New Straitsville to inform the public of a Monday Creek feasibility study developed by MCRP, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and ILGARD.

Conducted a tour of Monday Creek acid mine drainage and reclamation sites as part of the Ohio Environmental Council’s "Real Ohio" tour program.

Hosted several Watershed tours, including MCRP’s Annual Watershed Tour and tours for Kent State students and U.S. Congressional representatives.

Installed a water-powered neutralization device to treat Monday Creek’s main stem over a six-mile length.

Cleaned trash from roads and public areas in the watershed, including one mile of stream, and along three miles of SR 78 between Murray City and Buchtel.

Received the 2004 Conservation Achievement Of The Year Award from the Ohio Environmental Council and the 2004 Minerals Education Award from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Sunday Creek Watershed Group

Planted 2,017 trees on private property and in Corning’s John Altier Park.

Completed Congo Run Stream Capture Subsidence Closure (acid mine drainage reclamation project to fill and rechannel the stream).

Stream sweeps and trash cleanups in Chauncey, Glouster and along the Buckeye Trail.

Helped local youth at SPiCYAM (Southern Perry County Youth & Arts Media) create a SCWG video.

Educated Nelsonville-York, Athens City and Trimble school students about water quality, acid mine drainage and recycling.

Raised $712 at the First Annual SCWG Chinese Auction.

Completed three home septic upgrades in Glouster and one in Trimble as part of an OEPA-approved Home Sewage Treatment System Project to reduce waste entering Sunday Creek.

Performed long- and short-term monitoring on reclamation sites including the West Branch, a headwater of Sunday Creek, providing data that will help in developing a plan to reclaim contaminating seeps.

Southeast Ohio Watershed Council

Convened watershed coordinators and group representatives from throughout the region for networking and training on fundraising, grant writing and community organizing.

Created a strategic plan for 2005 to build the sustainability of the organization and develop its leaders to take on the council’s administration.
